Zoom Launches Low-Cost Transatlantic Route
The aviation industry is facing a major shake-up after Zoom Airlines revealed details of £129 flights from London to New York.
This will represent the very first low-fare, long-haul air service and it has been promoted as a revolutionary development for the industry.
Zoom was founded in 2002 by Scottish brothers John and Hugh Boyle, who spotted a gap in the market in Canada. The airline was originally created to operate routes between the UK and Canada but it has since expanded its network considerably.
From June 21st, Zoom will transform its reputation once again, sending shockwaves through an industry that has been able to retain relatively high prices for transatlantic flights over the years.
Flights will operate between London Gatwick and New York JFK and passengers will reportedly enjoy an "easyJet-style" booking service. Economy and Premium Economy services will be available and customers have been promised "plenty of frills".
John Boyle said: "You cannot put a sheaf of paper between the prices charged by BA, Virgin and the American carriers on the New York route and it is high time that passengers had a better deal. We are offering savings of up to 70 per cent on these flights."
"Our catch phrase is 'Now you're sitting comfortably' and we think this will appeal to people who, quite frankly, have been forced to pay outrageously high fares to fly between London and New York for too long."
Passengers will depart from Gatwick's South Terminal and will fly into Terminal 4 at JFK. Flights will depart London every lunchtime and will arrive in the Big Apple mid-afternoon. Return flights will take off in New York in the evening and arrive back in England at 6am.
Initially, the carrier will operate five flights each week between the two cities as well as two off-peak services that fly via Bermuda.
Shortly after Zoom's announcement, Ryanair's gregarious chief executive Michael O'Leary revealed that he hoped to offer transatlantic flights for less than £7 before the end of the decade, which would further transfigure the market.
Environmentalists argue that cheap flights of this nature will encourage frivolous travel, exacerbating the aviation industry's contribution to climate change.
