Tan in Tunis
Be ahead of the pack and visit Tunisia’s beautiful and relatively undiscovered Tunis this summer, for an exotic break without the long-haul flight and expense. Tunis is a vibey city in a stunning setting, offering the best of all worlds – think sunny beaches, colourful festivals, ancient ruins, bustling markets and trendy hotels, cafés and restaurants.
Located at Africa’s northern tip, it’s an adventure-lover’s paradise, perfect for watersports like surfing, sailing and fishing, but also for golfing and sunbathing in the gorgeous Mediterranean climate – in mid-summer it averages 33 degrees. There are also fantastic Roman, Arab and Phoenician ruins, the best known being the ancient city of Carthage, located on the Eastern side of Lake Tunis.
In the summer, you can take part in a variety of festivals, two of the most famous celebrating local folklore and Father Neptune. Plus you can shop till you drop for stylish traditional items like silver jewellery, leather, wooden bangles and ceramics.

Race the Bulls in Pamplona
The annual bull run festival in Spain’s Pamplona has become a major event on the quirky festivals calendar, with thousands from all over the world flocking to the picturesque town between 6th and 14th July every year.
If you’ve been living under a rock, the bull run (Encierro) is a spectacular race at the heart of the famous Sanfermines festival, where bulls charge after daredevil townsfolk and tourists down the streets of Pamplona into the bull ring, a race that’s repeated every morning of the crazy 9 day fiesta as the church of San Cernin strikes 8am. Don’t worry though if you’d prefer to watch from a safe distance – during the bull run the street is fenced off, and thousands of tourists watch the festivities from balconies looking out onto the chase.
It’s a non-stop carnival featuring music, dancing, delicious food and the streets buzzing with traditionally dressed carnival performers and locals wearing red and white. In the evenings, there are also bull fights.
Daily flights are available to Noáin, 6.5 kilometres south of Pamplona, from Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon. You can also get there by rail or road trip.

Party at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival
It’s been around for 61 years and although it was started by a group of performers who weren’t considered good enough for the Edinburgh International Festival, and was first held in a small pub with a leaky roof, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival now sells over 1.6 million tickets a year.
Taking place in August, expect theatre, comedy, musicals, events, exhibitions, dance and fantastic bands. Last year there were an amazing 31,000 performances, many of them free.
But it’s not just about great entertainment. For the month of August, the streets and bars of Edinburgh go mad with buzzing energy and partying people – most of the pubs staying open until 5am.
The Fringe box office opens on 9th June and the Festival runs from 3rd – 25th August.
