Holidaymakers Set for Spanish Airport Chaos?

The popularity of Spain as a holiday destination could lead to long delays at the airport due to new security measures.

It has been reported that all Brits flying to Spain will be forced to provide extra information before travelling due to Spanish government plans to introduce US-style entry requirements.

On June 13th, all passengers wanting to enter Spain will be required to provide Advance Passenger Information (API), otherwise they could be rejected from their planned flight. The API requires that all travellers give information such as date of birth and passport number.

However, the added security checks are likely to result in inconvenience for a number of travellers as well as additional queues at check-in desks. Similar checks introduced in 2004 in the US have led to long delays and missed flights for many visitors.

Airlines are keen to avoid such costly and lengthy delays with the new Spanish system and British Airways is already advising its customers to consider completing the API online before leaving for the airport or at special kiosks on arrival.

A statement issued by BA explained: "Staff at check-in desks will also be able to collect API data but passengers are strongly advised to supply the information prior to arrival at the airport, or at a self service kiosk where available, to avoid unnecessary delays."

Spain is currently Briton's most popular overseas holiday destination with around 12.5 million visitors heading for its attractions every year. The introduction of API is expected to prove very unpopular, especially as its introduction will coincide with the peak summer travel period. ADNFCR-824-ID-18156274-ADNFCR
