Exchange Rate Fuels Holiday Demand To USA

Travellers will see their holiday money stretch even further now on trips to the USA as the soaring exchange rate sees the pound almost make the $2 mark – but the weak dollar could also discourage Britain’s American tourists.

Travel retailer Flight Centre predicts it will see an increase in all types of holidays to the USA over the coming weeks as the pound reaches a 14-year high against the dollar, including short break shopping trips, family holidays to Disney and even late season skiing in places like Breckenridge and Lake Tahoe.

“We expect to see people who have been considering visiting the USA now booking, encouraged by the best exchange rate in years,” said Zoë Heywood, marketing manager at Flight Centre. “The USA has always been a great value destination, but this makes it even more so, giving holidaymakers greater spending power to get more from their trip whether this is shopping in New York, a last minute skiing trip or taking a flutter in the casinos of Las Vegas.”

Meanwhile, the Association of British Travel Agents confirmed that last time the pound was particularly strong there was massive increase in visitors.

“It’s never been cheaper to get to America in the first place. Now with the weakness of the dollar the flights for US travellers become less attractive,” a spokesperson told the Times. “The airlines need to fill those seats, so they will have to drop their prices even more.”
