THIS COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED. THE ANSWER WAS MENTON.
Each month we tease our readers with a description of a particular
location and invite them to guess the place we are describing for a chance to
win £20.
The Clue
In Victorian times this coastal city was a haven for people who suffered from
chest complaints, including many Brits: William Webb Ellis, the inventor of
rugby, is buried here and there is even a statue of Queen Victoria. Voted the
best city in the ‘country for flowers’ an impressive five times,
a total of eight gardens are open to the public, including the Val Rahmeh botanic
garden created by Lord Radcliffe in l905. Devastated during the closing months
of the Second World War, this now popular destination did not regain its tourist
appeal until the 1960s, after a period of significant rebuilding.
